Its a wood moderately easy to dry as on natural air as on kiln, developing moderate
defects, however is extremely slow to dry and occasionally tends to collapse. It is
recommended to use the schedules kiln T6-D4 and T3-D3 for 1 and 2 inches boards
respectively.
Natural Durability
Is a wood very resistant to decay funguses attacks and moderately resistant to termites
attacks.
Working Properties
Its a wood easy to saw and to work with handwork tools, with a good behavior for
planning, mortising and turning, excellent for moulding , sanding, boring and easy to
nailing. This wood present an excellent finished.
Uses
Furniture or visible parts of this, so much for interiors like on exteriors, doors,
windows, decorative veneers, boats, panels, and general carpentry. For its low to medium

Common name: Amargoso,
Cucaracho (Bitter Angelim)
Scientific name: Vatairea lundellii (Standl) Killip.
Family: Fabaceae
Distribution
Semi-deciduous and wet forest species of lowlands or hillsides, and lowland savannas,
usually found in flood planes, periodically flooded areas or well-drained slopes. It is
distributed in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In Honduras, it grows in
wet and very wet forests of the Atlantic seaboard up to an altitude of 600 meters. It is
an emerging species of upper strata. It has been reported in the departments of Atlantida,
Cortes, Colon, Olancho, Yoro, Comayagua and Santa Barbara.
Organoleptic Characteristics
Light brown, semi-opaque wood with pronounced and highly variable striping, thick texture,
and interlocked and wavy grain. Upon recent cutting, it presents a yellowish color that
changes as exposure prolongs. It releases an unpleasant odor in its green state and is
highly irritating to the skin and throat, to the point of producing burns. It has a very
bitter flavor.

Drying
This wood is easy to dry; it dries outdoors at slow speed, developing moderate defects.
Drying programs T5-D3 and T3-D2 for 1 and 2 boards (respectively) are
recommended for drying this wood in conventional ovens.
Natural durability
Moderately durable wood; standing trees are susceptible to borer attacks, in regards to
termite attacks, and it is also considered moderately resistant and susceptible to marine
borer attacks.
Workability
It is moderately easy to work on; however, protective gear must be used due to the
irritant dust it gives off, which can affect the skin. It shows poor performance in
planing and turning, excellent for drilling, good performance for chiseling and molding,
poor sanding and very difficult to nail.
In terms of finish, this species does not tend to absorb much sealer due to its medium
sized pores. It accepts all types of dyeing, which is a favorable advantage, given the
color and striping variations it presents. Transparent lacquers are recommended for the
final finish of this species since they enhance its color and striping.
Uses
Linear furniture, doors, windows, wood sheet, medium traffic floors, tool handles, sports
equipment. It should be noted that, in order to work this wood, protective measures should
be taken due to the irritation it causes on the throat and skin. |

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Trinidad and
Tobago, and Venezuela (5). In Honduras, it develops at low to medium low elevations, with
dry to humid climates. It has been reported in the departments of Colon, Atlantida,
Comayagua, Fco. Morazán, Yoro and Cortes.

Drying
Outdoor drying is moderately easy, occurring at a very slow rate with the development of
moderate drying defects, especially cracks and flaws.
Drying programs T3-C2 and T3-C1 for 1 and 2 boards
(respectively) are recommended for drying this wood in conventional ovens.
Natural durability
This species offers high natural durability and it is fungus and termite resistant. The
standing tree, however, is quite susceptible to borer attacks.
Workability
Since this wood is difficult to work with manual tools and traditional machinery, we
recommend to keep blades at all times, with adequate angles and cutting edges, especially
when working with high speed steel blades; carburized blades can increase performance up
to three fold. It shows poor performance in planing and turning, excellent for molding,
drilling and chiseling, good to excellent for sanding and difficult to nail. Due to its
medium-sized pores, its necessary to apply two to three coats of sealer to achieve a
good finish. This wood boasts a very beautiful, pronounced striping, making the
transparent finish the most appropriate one. In general this wood finishes very smoothly.
Uses
Production of high quality, linear and turned furniture, carpentry in general, doors and
windows for interiors and exteriors, kitchen cabinetry and similar, general construction,
floors, shock-resistant tool and sport equipment handles. |
